Summative Assessments in band are based on the following:
Practice Records ( or practicing responsibility for 7th and 8th graders)
Rehearsal Skills ( being prepared with instrument and music every day, knowing when to talk and when to play)
Tests and Quizzes (which include concerts)
Nominations for the Habits of Learning school-wide program are based on the following:
Having ALL materials every day ( music, instrument)
Being on time, ready to go at the appointed time
Not having gum or edibles in class
Not being asked to leave class for behavior reasons
Celebration of Great Practicing is a 6th grade end of quarter activity for students who get ALL their practice records signed and in on time for any given quarter.
Practicing
Students need to develop skill, technique range and muscle tone outside of class. 6th graders record their practicing on a sheet provided, and turn it in every Monday. A parent signature is required. The signature is not to indicate that you have seen every minute of the practice, but for the team of student, teacher and parent to be able to communicate about what we are seeing. Any practice record for a given quarter is accepted and counts towards the student's grade. Practice records are counted as being "on time" if they are turned in any day prior to the next practice records due date.
Rehearsal Skills: A rehearsal skills grade is given every day, and the average for the week is posted on PowerGrade. Rehearsal Skills is how a musician deals with the everyday working of their band. It includes having their instrument, music and supplies, having great posture and position to play their best, knowing when to play, when to talk, when NOT to play and when NOT to talk.
Tests and quizzes are a mixture of written work (in which students are able to identify what they need to know about music and their instrument.) and playing tests (which demonstrate their skills, development and the applications of what they've learned.
All grades are based on a 4 point standard. 4=Exceeds Mastery, 3= Mastery,2=Near Mastery, 1=Beginning
