INCOMING 6TH GRADE SUMMER SCHEDULE
|
From June 29th to July 24th incoming 6th graders have the opportunity to take part in instrument-alike band classes. It gives students a greater understanding of what their instrument can do and the successes and challenges that go with each instrument, without all the other instrument types being present, like they are in the fall. ( see the page called "Summer Opportunities")
The time line for 5th graders coming in to middle school looks something like this:
January: Middle school students travel to each elementary school to give the 5th graders ideas and information on how they should
choose their music class for 6th grade. Because it's the only class 6th graders take that they have a choice in - those choices
should be made carefully. At this meeting, 5th graders are asked to choose their top 3 choices from band, choir, general music
and orchestra.
February: Middle school teachers come back to the elementary schools to have individual meetings with each 5th grader to try out
instrument possibilities, and talk about what they feel is best for them. A preliminary decision is reached at this time.
March: Administrators and 6th graders come to the elementary schools with registration forms to give 5th graders general information
on Middle School.
April: Registration forms are turned in to the 5th grade teachers, and their final music choice is indicated on that sheet.
June 2nd: Band parent meeting to discuss things like how to get an instrument, expectations of a VAMS Band student etc.
